Sri Lanka: METABUILD Project Closing Event

The National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) Sri Lanka successfully conducted the Project Dissemination event of “Resource efficient supply chain for metal products in building sector in South Asia” (METABUILD) funded by the European Union (EU) under the SWITCH Asia Programme and the ceremony of “National Cleaner Production Awards 2019”. These two events were conducted on the 21st of January 2020 at Waters Edge, Battaramulla, attended by over 200 invited participants with the objective of disseminating key outputs of the project to a wider stakeholder group.

Among the participants were the EU delegation to Sri Lanka, representatives from UNIDO, UNDP, several Ministries, chambers as well as representatives of industries and project partners. Mr. Frank Hess, Head of Cooperation section at European Union Delegation to Sri Lanka and Maldives addressed the ceremony and emphasised the importance of Sustainable Consumption and Production and its practical perspectives. Dr. Malini Balakrishnan, Project coordinator of the METABUILD project, discussed the outcome and achievements of the project over the four-year period.

Mr. Samantha Kumarasena, Chief Executive Officer, NCPC Sri Lanka spoke on the impact of METABUILD activities in Sri Lanka and how it guided the way forward. 81 metal industries within Sri Lanka, mainly from rolling, foundry, fabrication and metal finishing sectors participated in the project. Companies that participated in the project achieved an energy saving of 9.9 GWh, a water saving of 7.9 Million litres and an annual waste reduction of 20 tones.The highlights of the session were presenting certificates for selected industries and awarding Moscow Lanka Steel Pvt. Ltd. as the most outstanding company. 

Following the main event, a project dissemination event for other industries that participated in the project was conducted on the 22nd of January at hotel Renuka, Colombo 03 with over 20 companies participating. These companies were also recognised for their achievements.
